| A Plan to End Child Poverty

In 1999, Britain's government made a commitment to eliminate child poverty by the year 2020. After seven years, it has helped 700,000 children and their families out of poverty. This is a 17 percent reduction; less than the goal of 25 percent but still significant. In the US, however, there is no such federal commitment and so even though we are told our economy has grown, the number of children in our coummunities who are growing up in poverty has increased. | Trade Deficit Continues to Worsen

The Washington Post reports that in 2005, the US trade deficit soared to a record in 2005 for the fourth year in a row. Our country imported $725.8 billion more in goods and services
than we exported last year, that's up
17.5 percent. The more the trade deficit widens and the longer it persists,
the greater US becomes indebted to interests outside the US. The economic security of American families is increasingly outside of the control of our own country.
