Troops want US to exit Iraq this year

An overwhelming majority of 72% of American troops serving in Iraq think the U.S. should exit the country within the next year, and nearly one in four say the troops should leave immediately, a new Le Moyne College/Zogby International survey shows.

Charlie Cray, the director of The Center for Corporate Policy, writes that President Bush just sent Congress a request for another $72.4 billion for the Iraq war and occupation. Instead of writing another blank check, Congress should commit itself to a thorough investigation of the incompetence and corruption that has undermined the reconstruction mission. At the same time that it demands that the administration provide a clearer overall strategy in Iraq, Congress should establish a permanent committee on war profiteering and corruption modeled after the one Harry Truman chaired during World War II.

Trade Deficit Continues to Worsen

The Washington Post reports that in 2005, the US trade deficit soared to a record in 2005 for the fourth year in a row. Our country imported $725.8 billion more in goods and services than we exported last year, that's up 17.5 percent. The more the trade deficit widens and the longer it persists, the greater US becomes indebted to interests outside the US. The economic security of American families is increasingly outside of the control of our own country.
