When thousands of people donate no more than $100 per person per election, we can build a campaign without money from special interests. _______________________ But it's about more than money. We need your energy and your enthusiasm, too. Sign up to volunteer on Jim Hansen's campaign for Congress.

| A Plan to End Child Poverty

In 1999, Britain's government made a commitment to eliminate child poverty by the year 2020. After seven years, it has helped 700,000 children and their families out of poverty. This is a 17 percent reduction; less than the goal of 25 percent but still significant. In the US, however, there is no such federal commitment and so even though we are told our economy has grown, the number of children in our coummunities who are growing up in poverty has increased. Charlie Cray, the director of The Center for Corporate Policy, writes that President Bush just sent Congress a request for another $72.4
billion for the Iraq war and occupation. Instead of writing another
blank check, Congress should commit itself to a thorough investigation
of the incompetence and corruption that has undermined the
reconstruction mission. At the same time that it demands that the
administration provide a clearer overall strategy in Iraq, Congress
should establish a permanent committee on war profiteering and
corruption modeled after the one Harry Truman chaired during World War
II.

The Washington Post reports that in 2005, the US trade deficit soared to a record in 2005 for the fourth year in a row. Our country imported $725.8 billion more in goods and services
than we exported last year, that's up
17.5 percent. The more the trade deficit widens and the longer it persists,
the greater US becomes indebted to interests outside the US. The economic security of American families is increasingly outside of the control of our own country.
