When thousands of people donate no more than $100 per person per election, we can build a campaign without money from special interests.

Visiting BYU-Idaho, one of the gems of the state

Enjoyed a recent visit to BYU-Idaho in Rexburg. It is the fastest growing university in the state, having gone from being the two-year Ricks College to being a full four-year institution in 2000. It is a beautiful campus and a testament to the importance of higher education.
I spent quite a bit of time in the Rexburg area just before and during the recent State Democratic Convention in Idaho Falls. The campus of BYU-Idaho is beautifully situated on a hill on the south side of town and there are several major construction projects underway. I loved the Hyrum Manwaring Student Center the best, mostly because that is where there was a buzz of activity. Even in summer, there are a lot of students on campus. The Rotary Club meets there too. There is a great display on the history of the college from its humble beginnings to the impressive academic institution it has now become. Virtually the whole time I was in the building, I could hear music students practicing on the piano in the main hall upstairs. What a great idea to put a piano there as well as in the practice rooms so everyone can appreciate the music. If my daughter was with me, I know she would have made straight for the piano.

Having grown up in Idaho Falls, I've been on campus before but frankly we kind of took it for granted. I am impressed with its growth, which seems very well thought-out, not overwhelming. I understand there is not yet a place on campus for the entire student body of about 12,000 students to gather at the same time, but the ground has been leveled for just such an arena to replace the old Hart arena.

I've gotten to know some great students who attend BYU-Idaho. Several of my extended family studied there when it was Ricks College and now there is another generation of Hansens attending. I heard great things about the new president and I look forward to meeting him and hearing about his vision for the university.
