When thousands of people donate no more than $100 per person per election, we can build a campaign without money from special interests.

WASHINGTON — The former CIA official charged with managing the U.S. government's secret intelligence assessments on Iraq says the Bush administration chose war first and then misleadingly used raw data to assemble a public case for its decision to invade.

Paul Pillar, the CIA's national intelligence officer for the Near East and South Asia from 2000 to 2005, said the Bush administration also played on the nation's fears after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, falsely linking al-Qaida to Saddam Hussein's government even though intelligence agencies had not produced a single analysis supporting "the notion of an alliance" between the two.

The reason I posted the above article is because it points to the pattern of irresponsibility  that has plagued this administration, and to the lack of checks and balances in government that Jim has talked about.  This is not the first time government officials have come out and said these things about Bush's handling of Iraq and the "War on Terror".  Under our traditional American system of checks and balances we would be seeing impartial and independent investigations to these allegations.  But unfortunately, with the dominance of the Republican party through all branches of our government, we get nothing more than political rhetoric or maybe an investigation committee comprised mostly of Republicans and those loyal to the White House.  Nothing critical or revealing will ever come out of this corruption of the system, and the American public will continue to fall prey to manipulation and misinformation.
