When thousands of people donate no more than $100 per person per election, we can build a campaign without money from special interests.

As the election approaches, I would love to know how much money Jim Hansen gets from in-state vs out-of-state sources compared to Mike Simson. If there's anything Idahoans are sensitive about, it's out-of-staters trying to influence Idaho affairs.  I'm betting that Mike Simson will get a lot more out-of-state money than Jim Hansen does, and I think that, in itself, can be a campaign issue.

I'm also wondering if the issue of out-of-state money couldn't disappear for Jim entirely and work to his advantage, if Jim decided not to accept any out-of-state money.  If the goal is $100 from 5,000 people, that should be manageable entirely in-state.

As it happens, I do have some facts on this, and a great resource for finding out more:

If you follow this link, you will see that in his last report, Mike Simpson got roughly 80% of his contributions from out-of-state, and 20% from Idaho.

http://www.opensecrets.org/politicians/geog.asp?CID=N00006263&cycle=2006

One reason so many of Simpson's contributions come from out of state is because he gets most of his money (about 75%) from Political Action Committees (PACS). PACS are organized by corporations and other powerful big-money interests groups because it has become an expectation that if they want to move their agenda in Washington, they better show up on FEC reports of incumbants.

The don't have as much data for Jim because he isn't a member of Congress (yet). And, because Jim is only accepting $100 per election, and only from individuals, the FEC doesn't track the names of donors. They just go into a big pile called "unitemized". Of course, the campaign tracks these numbers. I have not figured out how many contributions come from in state, but its a clear majority. Friends and family living out of state do send contributions. If I had to hazard a guess that you should not hold me to, I would say at least 80% are in-state.

I recommend everyone spend a little time at www.opensecrets.org, and get a feel for the massive amounts of private money flowing through our public elections.
