When thousands of people donate no more than $100 per person per election, we can build a campaign without money from special interests.

I need to preface this post by noting that I am a former Democrat turned into an independent because of the lack of convictions and substance in the current Democratic party -- state and nation wide.

The latest example of Democratic lack of conviction is the objections  by Congressional Democrats, Levin, Feingold, and Boxer, to the Iraqi government's proposal for general amnesty for insurgents.  Democrats oppose it with speeches about insurgents who have been responsible for the deaths of Americans shouldn't be given amnesty.

How do those Democrats square such an argument with the supposed independence of the government of Iraq?  Iraq is free to do, I would hope, whatever it has to do in order to restore order and peace.  It should be clear by now that we, the US, are unable to bring peace to Iraq. The responsibility the Iraqi government has to Iraqis to establish peace should supersede any perceived obligations to us, and if the Iraqis believe that a general amnesty will bring peace, they should be free to pursue that.

The only reason I can think of for the Democrats to be opposing general amnesty in Iraq is that they see it as something that will resonate with patriotic voters.  Whether that opposition helps or hurts Iraqi efforts is beside the point, apparently, for Democrats.

I expect the Republicans to make pseudo-patriotic arguments in order to score political points with the mindless masses.  When Democrats do it, I know I have no representation in the two main political parties.
